DHAKA: BNP leaders and activists brought out processions and exploded cocktails at different places of the city on Thursday morning during the 20-party alliance-called hartal and the 10th day of nationwide indefinite blockade.
Police held a picketer while trying to set fire to a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Gulshan area of the city.
Gulshan Thana Officer-In-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam confirmed the detention to banglanews.
In Shantinagar, BNP-men brought out a procession at 7:30am and exploded at least five cocktails to create panic in the area.
On information, police reached to the spot, gave them a chase. Being chased, the BNP-men left the scene.
No casualty was reported in the incident.
In Old Dhaka, hartal supporters brought out a brisk procession in front of Begum Badrunnesa Government Girl’s College in Bakshibazar area and exploded three cocktails there.
Chawkbazar Thana duty officer Sub-Inspector (SI) Mokbul Hossain told banglanews that mobile team is looking into the matter.
In Comilla, six people were injured in a clash between Awami League and BNP men in the metropolitan around 10:00am.
Activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami vandalized and torched vehicles including bus-truck in different district of the country in support of hartal.
On the other hand, law enforcers detained hundreds of leaders-activists of BNP-Jamaat alliance at places in the country to avert sabotage.
Pre-hartal violence
A bus driver was burnt alive as arsonists set fire to the vehicle in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur early Thursday, hours before the beginning of 20-party-called hartal.
The deceased was identified as Toazzal Hossain, 28.
On the other hand, miscreants set fire to a private car and a truck in Jorpukurpar of city’s Khilgaon area on Thursday hours before the beginning of 20-party alliance-called hartal, amid the 10th day of nationwide indefinite blockade.
The arson attack took place around at 4:40am.
Ten Chhatra Shibir-BNP activists were detained after they hurled three cocktails at the car of Cox’ Bazaar police super Shyamol Kumar Nath on Wednesday midnight.
Witnesses and police said that three 20-party groups, consisting around 50 activists, blasted eight cocktails within a minute in the area.
The dawn-to-dusk hartal, enforced by the alliance, is underway across the country protesting the attack on Reaz Rahman, an adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and also ex-state minister for foreign affairs.
