COMILLA: At least nine people, including DB police constable Aminul, were injured in a clash between leaders and activists of ruling Awami League (AL) and opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Kandirpar area of the district town on Thursday morning.
Moreover, joint convener of the Kotwali unit Juba Dal committee Momen sustained severe injuries after being chopped by rivals during the clash while identity of other injured could not be known.
Local sources said leaders and activists of BNP and its front organizations brought out a pro-hartal procession in the area around 10:00am. At that time, supporters of AL and its associate bodies chased them, triggering a clash there.
Witness said cocktails were exploded one after another during the clash and police fired over two hundred rubber bullets in an effort to disperse the groups around 11:00am.
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed to assist police to make the situation normal.
The injured including Momen were admitted to Comilla Sadar Hospital, Comilla Medical College Hospital and other private clinics in the district.
Law enforcers have taken position in front of district BNP office while AL and BNP men were seen staying in Pubali Chattar and Ranirdighir Par areas respectively at 11:30am on the day.
Kotwali Thana inspector (inspection) Samsuzzaman told banglanews that the situation has now come under control.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Comilla Detective Branch (DB) of police Manzurul Alam said to banglanews that one of their members was chopped during the clash. Details of his condition will be disclosed later.
