DHAKA: An appeal was filed with the Appellate Division challenging the High Court order that had rejected the writ petition for deferment of the Dhaka City Corporations elections, staled to be held for January 30.
Advocate Ashoke Kumar Ghosh, a Supreme Court lawyer, filed the appeal as the High Court on Tuesday (Jan 14) rejected his writ petition seeking its directive to defer the polls as Saraswati Puja, one of the biggest religious festivals of the Hindu community, will be celebrated across the country on the day.
Ashoke Kumar Ghosh confirmed the matter to Banglanews on Thursday (Jan 16) and said the hearing on the appeal might be held on Sunday (Jan 19).
The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order considering the progress in the election process and the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations scheduled to take place on February 2.
The Election Commission, as per schedule, will hold Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on January 30.
