DHAKA: Additional police have been deployed in front of the headquarters of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the capital’s Nayapaltan area.
Members of law enforcement agencies in uniform and plain clothes gathered in front of the BNP office on Saturday (Feb 15) morning.
The party is set to stage demonstration today (Saturday) to realise the demand for release of imprisoned BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
It is believed that additional members of law enforcing agencies were deployed at the area amid the pre-declared demonstration.
BNP Publicity Affairs Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie told Banglanews: “We informed the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner to stage the demonstration. Though the DMP told us to give a reply in this regard by 10:00 am on Saturday, we haven’t got that yet.”
Party vice chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu told Banglanews, “Police might intercept the program, we have heard. But we have not canceled our programme yet.”
When contacted, DMP Paltan Police Station OC Abu Bakar said: “Permission is to be taken before arranging any programme on roads. We have taken additional security measures there to avert untoward incidents.”
