DHAKA: The High Court again rejected BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's bail petition in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

The court also asked authorities to ensure advanced treatment for the former prime minister if she gives her consent.

The bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice AKM Zahirul Huq issued the order after hearing the bail petition on Thursday (Feb 27).

In its observation, the court said it is possible for the board to provide treatment to Khaleda Zia. 

“If she wants, the medical board will start the treatment anytime soon. New physicians can be included, if the medical board wants,” the court added.

The bench read out the health report of the former prime minister in the morning after Supreme Court Registrar General placed the medical report before the bench submitted by the authorities of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) yesterday.

According to the report, Khaleda Zia has not given her consent to ‘advanced treatment’, recommended by the medical board of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. 

On Tuesday (Feb 18), Khaleda Zia's lawyer panel member Advocate Sagir Hossain Leon filed the petition citing her illness.

Later on Wednesday (Feb 19) Khaleda’s counsel Khandaker Mahbub Hossain placed the petition before the court. Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Khurshid Alam was present there.

On February 22, the HC bench sought information about the medical treatment of Khaleda Zia, who is now in the prison cell of BSMMU.

Earlier her bail petitions in the case were turned down three times– July 31, September 3 and December 12 in 2019.
