Thousands of enthusiastic Bangladeshi cricket fans gathered in large numbers at one of the biggest shopping malls of the country ‘Bashundhara City Shopping Complex’ to watch the trophy of the ICC World Cup on Wednesday.
As part of a three-day official tour, the trophy was brought to the Bashundhara City Shopping Complex in Panthapath for a public display on the last day of its tour in Bangladesh.
The trophy was exhibited for around nine hours – from 11:00am to 08:00pm – and people waited for hours in line to take photos with the most coveted cricket trophy on earth.
The shopping mall turned out to be a festival place with the way people came to see the trophy and reacted and from children to aged people, all were very happy after creating memories with the trophy.
“I wanted to have a memory with the trophy. I hope that our players will be able to bring back this trophy to our country again by winning it in the World Cup,” Rezaul Karim, a graduate from University of Dhaka said after taking a photo with the trophy.
Rakib Mosavvir, a college student and also a keen cricket follower, believed that Bangladesh have a good chance to win the World Cup this year and hoped to see the Tigers’ celebration parade in Dhaka with the trophy.
“I think with recent performances, Bangladesh are one of the top contenders to win the World Cup. I definitely want them to celebrate with the trophy in Dhaka after the final,” he said.
The trophy left for Kuwait on the same night for another two-day tour in that part of the world.
The World Cup trophy earlier arrived in Dhaka on Sunday midnight and an official photoshoot of the trophy took place at the Padma Multipurpose Bridge on Monday evening.
The trophy visited ‘the home of cricket’ - Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday where members of the national cricket team alongside the BCB officials and directors, the women’s team, former cricketers, U-19 players, BKSP students and journalists got opportunities to see the prestigious trophy from a close distance. The trophy tour, which started on June 27 in India, is covering 18 countries around the world, including Bahrain, Malaysia, Nigeria, Uganda, France, Italy and the United States of America.
The tour will end at the host nation on September 4.
The 13th edition of the biggest cricket tournament will get underway with a rematch of the two finalists of the last edition – England and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 5.
Bangladesh will begin their campaign in the 10-team event against Afghanistan in Dharamsala on October 7. The final will be held in Ahmedabad on November 19.
