Chess Olympiad: BD still in battle field

DHAKA: After conceding defeat in the 5th round matches of the 41st World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway -- both Bangladesh men’s and women’s teams are still in the war of intelligence.

Bangladesh men’s (Open) team is going to play against Singapore while women’s team to face Chinese Taipei on Friday.

Earlier in the 4th round matches on Tuesday, Bangladesh men’s team lost to former Olympiad champion Ukraine by 1-3 points in the open section while Bangladesh Women’s team lost to Switzerland by 0.5-3.5 points in the women’s section, reports the V News.

Moreover, in the 5th round matches, Bangladesh men’s team, ranked 55th in the open section, lost to ranked 20th Peru by 1-3 points in the open section while Bangladesh women’s team lost to Iceland by 1.5-2.5 points in the women’s section.

In the open section, Bangladeshi GM Ziaur Rahman (Rating-2523) drew with GM Julio E Granda Zuniga (Rating 2663) while another Bangladeshi GM Abdullah Al Rakib (Rating-2522) drew with GM Emilio Cordova (Rating 2629) of Peru.

GM Enamul Hossain Razib lost to GM Cori Jorge (Rating-2630) and IM Minhazuddin Ahmed Sagar (Rating-2418) lost to GM Cruz Cristhian (Rating-2553) of Peru.

Bangladesh Open team earned 5 match points and 10 game points after 5th round matches.

In the women’s section, Sharmin Sultana Shirin (Rating-1984) of Bangladesh beat Johannsdottir Johanna Bjorg (Rating-1862) while WIM Rani Hamid drew with Thorsteinsdottir Hallgerdur (Rating-1982).

Bangladeshi WIM Shamima Akter Liza (Rating-2147) lost to WGM Ptacnikova Lenka (Rating-2273) while WFM Zakia Sultana (Rating-1964) lost to Finnbogadottir Tinna Kristin (Rating-1915).

Bangladesh women’s team earned 4 match points and 9 game points after 5th round matches.
