Bangladesh hopes stronger ties under Trump’s presidency

The Chief Adviser's Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, on Wednesday (November 6) said that this government hopes to see the relationship between Bangladesh and the United States strengthen and reach new heights during the presidency of recently elected US President Donald Trump.

“We welcome his victory and hope that Bangladesh-US relations will grow stronger, with the ties between our nations reaching new heights," Alam said during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy.

Alam noted that Bangladesh already enjoys a positive relationship with the US, which has gained new momentum following the August revolution in Bangladesh.

Highlighting the US's commitment to promoting democracy globally, Alam stated that the US recognizes the interim government’s efforts to guide Bangladesh towards a democratic transition after 15 years under an autocratic regime. This recognition has led the US to expand its cooperation with Bangladesh.

“We hope for deeper Bangladesh-US relations under Donald Trump's presidency. As you know, Prof Yunus has strong connections with both the Democratic and Republican parties and maintains personal friendships with key leaders from both sides,” he added.

In response to a question about Trump’s recent comments on Bangladesh, Alam suggested that Trump might have been misinformed.

Donald Trump achieved a decisive victory in the US presidential election on Wednesday, defeating Kamala Harris in a remarkable comeback.

When asked about possible initiatives in Bangladesh’s education sector, Alam confirmed that the government is contemplating the formation of a new commission to introduce reforms in education.

Deputy Press Secretaries Abul Kalam Azad Majumder and Apurba Jahangir also attended the briefing.
