Villagers engage in harpoon fight in Rajbari: 1 killed, 20 injured

RAJBARI: One person was killed and at least 20 others were injured as hordes of villagers fought a fierce harpoon fight over a trifling matter at Naduria village in Coshbamajail union of Pangsa upazila in the district on Sunday morning.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Gafur alias Panjab Ali Khan, 65, a farmer of Lohabaria village.

The injured are Aiub Ali, Amzad Hossain, Hanef, Tansel, Afzal, Mojibor, Jamal, Amirul, Mintu, Lufor Sheikh, Tito, Bakar, Amir Ali, Sattar, Badshah, Malek and four others.

Among them, Amzad Hossain was in critical condition.
 
The injured were rushed to different hospitals of Pangsa, Magura, Faridpur and Dhaka.

Sub-Inspector of Pangsa thana said an altercation occurred among some buyers over the buying of cattle meat on the Eid day.

In a sequel to the incident, a group of 30/40 people led by Abdul Hakim of Naduria attacked the union parishad chairman and respectable persons of the areas with lethal and sharp weapons when they reached there to settle the matter at around 8am on the day.

"At one stage of the attack, a bloody clash erupted between the two rival groups of the village that left Abdul Gafur dead on the spot and 20 people injured," says a spot account of the rioting.

Md Zillul Hakim MP, Syeda Shahana Bari, Deputy Commissioner of Rajbari, and Police Super Ainul Bari visited the spot following the incident.

Zillul Hakim said, "Legal action is being taken and law enforcers are working in this regard."
