Flood situation: Somewhere deteriorates and somewhere improves

DHAKA: The flood situation in the country deteriorated in last 24 hours with new areas of Madaripur, Faridpur and Rajbari getting flooded, as the major rivers remained in spate.

Food and drinking water were found in short supply in the affected areas, reports from the areas said.

On the other hand, the situation improved in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra and Sherpur in the north, as water from different points in the districts receded.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) Thursday said the flood situation improved a little in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Sherpur Jamalpur, Sirajganj, Rajbari, Faridpur, Shariatpur, Munshiganj and Manikganj districts.

Besides, the situation deteriorated in Sylhet and Moulvibazar.

They said water levels at 34 points measured increased while at 29 points receded and at eight points remained unchanged in the last 24 hours. But waters at 11 points were flowing above danger levels.

Besides, banglanews correspondents from different districts informed that the people of the affected areas are living “in inhuman conditions”, leaving their inundated houses.

Faridpur: New areas of the district were flooded, including Charmadhabdia and Ambikapur. There are some 50,000 people affected due to the flooding. Some 11 shelter centres were opened in Sadar upazila.

Relief supplies were distributed among 300 affected families. But, the people of the areas are suffering a lot for want of drinking water.

Madaripur: Some 50 villages of four upazilas were flooded. A total of 150 villages in the district were affected by flood, said deputy director of agriculture extension department Kafil Uddin Ahmed. Crops of 50,000 hectares of land were damaged in the flood onslaughts.

Rajbari: Nine unions of three upazilas of the district were affected by the floods. Huge crops and vegetables were damaged.
