Education policy to be placed in next JS session: Nahid

DHAKA: The newly framed education policy, incorporating comprehensive changes in the sector, will be placed in the next parliamentary session for its review before final adoption.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid made the announcement at a seminar Friday, three days before parliament goes into session.

“The government has worked for a long time to finalise the much-talked-about National Education Policy 2010, which was approved by the cabinet,” he said.

The seminar, titled ‘Implementation of the National Education Policy-2010’ was organised at the National Press Club.

The daft policy was finalised based on experts’ opinions taken through internet, the minister informed the meet.

“It’s a wrong notion that many teachers may lose their jobs if the new education policy is implemented. “More teachers will rather be recruited,” the education minister said.

He further informed that a new pay scale for teachers will be implemented and urged sincerity from all in implementing the policy.

Representatives of teachers from different levels in the seminar also spoke about problems prevailing in the sector.

On May 31, the cabinet approved the Education Policy, aimed at updating country’s outmoded educational system in tune with needs of the new millennium.

Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina earlier had said there is no alternative to education for poverty alleviation and that it is also a most productive sector for investment.

On April 8, 2009, the National Education Policy Formulation Committee was formed with National Professor Kabir Chowdhury as its head. The committed submitted a draft to the Education Minister in September.

After consultation with stakeholders, the Education Ministry placed the draft policy before the Prime Minister on April 15 this year for her approval.
