BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged that the question of adopting a proportional representation (PR) electoral system be left to the next parliament to decide.
He made the remarks on Monday (October 13) after a meeting with leaders of a Christian forum at the BNP chairperson’s office in Dhaka’s Gulshan.
Fakhrul said voters would again deliver a verdict in the upcoming election that Bangladesh is genuinely non-communal.
Efforts were underway to ensure a free and fair poll, he added, although “various attempts” to disrupt the process were visible.
He argued that suddenly elevating PR as a rallying demand was not clear to those pressing for an expedited election, and reiterated that the issue should be deferred to the next legislature, which would determine the method for subsequent polls.
