A Dhaka court has exempted BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas and his wife, BNP leader Afroza Abbas, from a case alleging sabotage, assault and vandalism during election campaigning.
The order came on Monday (Oct 13) from the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court after defence lawyers sought discharge and the judge found no evidence to support the charges.
According to case records, the charges stemmed from a 2018 clash between police and BNP supporters near the party’s central office in the capital’s Naya Paltan area, where law enforcers later filed a case with Paltan Police Station alleging vandalism and sabotage.
Reacting to the verdict, Mirza Abbas said the cases against him and his wife were politically motivated and welcomed the court’s decision.
He urged swift disposal of what he described as other “vindictive” cases against BNP leaders and activists. Mirza Abbas serves on the BNP’s highest policymaking body, while Afroza Abbas heads the party’s women’s wing, the Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal.
