Gas price hike: BNP’s countrywide demo Tuesday

DHAKA: BNP will stage demonstrations across the country on Tuesday (July 2) protesting gas price hike.

The party leaders and activists have been asked to hold similar programme in all thanas of the capital on that day.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Monday (July 1) announced the demonstrations at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.

Districts and city units of the party will also hold protest rallies or bring out processions on the day, Rizvi added.

Mentioning that the gas price was raised sixth times in the last 10 years, the BNP joint secretary general alleged that government has continued making hard the livelihoods of countrymen with hike the price of utilities.

Citing that agriculture, industries, transport and power sectors will be badly affected with the rise in gas price, Rizvi said that general people will be the sufferers of it. 

Earlier on Sunday (June 30), Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has announced to increase the price of gas at all levels from July 1.

As per the latest announcement of BERC, consumers will have to pay Tk 925 for single burner and Tk 975 for double burner in per month. Prior to that, one and two burner stoves were priced at Tk 750 and 800 respectively.
