KURIGRAM: Two UP chairmen in Nageshwari upazila of Kurigram were suspended for issuing birth certificates to Rohingya women coming from Kutupalang Rohingya camp in Ukiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Al Imran on Wednesday (July 23) confirmed the information about suspension of the two chairmen to Banglanews.
He said that the local government, rural development and cooperative ministries on July 16 issued a notification on the issue.
According to notification, Nageshwari Upazila No. 6 Santoshpur UP Chairman Liaqat Ali Laku and Narayanpur UP Chairman Majibur Rahman No. 12 violated Sections 9 and 10 of the Birth and Death Certificate Registration Rule 2018, by issuing birth certificates to Rohingya women of the Kutupalang camp under Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar district.
Sources said Rohingya women Fatema Khatun, 26, Meem Khatun, 25, Aleya Khatun, 26, Nurika Khatun, 25, recognizing themselves as relative of one Arifa Khatun, wife of Anisur Rahman, a resident of Santoshpur UP in Nageshwari upazila collected birth certificates from two unions.
Later, on April 7 this year, they went to the Kurigram Passport Office to get passport for going to Malaysia. They were then arrested along with Arifa Khatun.
Nageshwari's acting UNO Al Imran told Banglanews that after holding separate meetings with members of Santoshpur and Narayanpur union parishad, chairmen will be assigned soon from the members on the basis of the opinion of all concerned.
