We’ll appeal for capital punishment of Tarique: Quader

DHAKA: Awami League will appeal to the High Court for the capital punishment of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, the alleged mastermind of the August 21 grenade attack.

“As the mastermind of the August 21 grenade attack, Tarique Rahman should be awarded highest punishment. For this we will go to the High Court”, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said.

The minister said in response to a question to reporters after paying homage to the martyrs in the grenade attack on Bangabandhu Avenue on Wednesday (August 21).

Obaidul Quader said, "We have the opportunity to go to the High Court. We'll go there. In the statement given by Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islam Bangladesh (Huji) chief Mufti Hannan, he said following the orders of Tareq Rahman, they launched the grenade attack on Awami League rally. As this attack has been judged, its masterminds would be brought to justice”.

Earlier on October 10, 2018, a special tribunal in Dhaka awarded death penalty to 19 people including former junior home minister Lutfuzzaman Babar and life imprisonment to 19 others including Tarique Rahman, son of ex-premier Khaleda Zia, in connection with the deadly grenade attack on August 21, 2004 that left 24 dead and hundreds injured.
