DHAKA: Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam’s lawyer said they would file a review petition against the Supreme Court's decision to uphold his death sentence.

Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain made this known to reporters after the Appellate Division's judgment had been announced on Thursday (Oct 31).

Mahbub Hossain said, "We will appeal this reconsideration within 15 days of receiving the full judgment of the Appellate Division. The judgment cannot be executed until the review application is settled.”

A four-member Appellate Division bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, upheld the death penalty of Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

On December 30 in 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced him to death for his crimes.
