DHAKA: The High Court on Thursday (November 28) granted eight weeks of anticipatory bail to four BNP leaders in a case filed for their alleged involvement in Tuesday’s (Nov 26) vandalism and attacks on police in city’s High Court area.

The four BNP leaders are-- its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir,  BNP’s Standing Committee Members Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Legal Affairs Secretary Barrister Kayser Kamal.

The HC bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan came up with the orders as BNP leaders appeared before the bench seeking bail in the case.

The HC ordered the BNP leaders to surrender to the trial court concerned within eight weeks in connection with the case.

Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Advocate Zainul Abedin, Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal appeared for the accused petitioners, while Deputy Attorney General Harunur Rashid represented the state.

A case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station against 500 BNP leaders and activists including the party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.  

Some leaders and activists of BNP staged demonstration and sit-in programme on HC premises on Tuesday afternoon demanding the release of party chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Apart from clash between BNP men and police, the agitators allegedly vandalized several vehicles on the road.
