BNP MPs affront parliament by tearing up budget copy: Quader

DHAKA: Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said BNP lawmakers have displayed great contempt to the parliament by tearing up the copy of newly passed budget for 20-21 fiscal year.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, made the remarks at a press briefing held in his official residence in Dhaka on Thursday (July 2).

He said: “In name of rejection, BNP MPs tore up the copy of the budget which was passed in the parliament. It is a great contempt to the parliament.”

“This act is tantamount to breaking their oaths and I condemn it. They failed to show responsible behavior in this dire situation the nation is facing currently,” he said.

The ruling party leader continued: “They wanted the parliament to not pass the budget. They wished to see a budget-less state.”

“However, it is unfortunate that we had to pass the budget during the pandemic. Many countries that passed their budget during this period had to shrink it significantly considering the special circumstances. Many have suspended budget formulation under special law. Few countries such as Pakistan witnessed negative growth,” he added.

“However, we managed to do it. It is the outcome of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s courageous decision making in due time,” Quader added.
