Bangladesh parliament dissolved

Bangladesh’s parliament has been dissolved this afternoon (Aug 6), a day after longtime Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country after weeks of deadly unrest.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved the parliament as per the decision following a discussion with the three army chiefs, leaders of various political parties, representatives of civil society and leaders of anti-discrimination student movement.

A press release was sent from Bangabhaban Press Wing around 3pm in this regard.

Earlier, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, a platform for protesting students, issued an ultimatum for dissolving the Jatiya Sangsad by 3pm.

Nahid Islam, one of the coordinators of the platform, gave the ultimatum in a video message today.

“Fascist Hasina's parliament has not been dissolved even after the mass upsurge. If it is not done by 3pm today, we will announce a tough programme tomorrow.”
