United Nations Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis today met with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna in the capital.

During the meeting, Lewis praised the strong collaboration between the UN and the interim government and discussed a wide range of issues focusing on Bangladesh’s development priorities and reform agenda.

The discussion centered on the upcoming national elections, scheduled for February next year. The UN Resident Coordinator reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to assist the Bangladesh Election Commission in holding free, fair, and peaceful polls.

“The UN fully supports the February general election as it is crucial for the country’s democratic transition,” Lewis said, adding that the UN is ready to help ensure transparency in the electoral process.

The two sides also explored areas where the UN could expand support for the interim government’s reform initiatives. Preparations for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York and a Rohingya conference later this month were also reviewed.

Both leaders expressed concern over the sharp decline in international funding for the Rohingya response, which has already affected education and other essential services in the camps. Chief Adviser Yunus called for sustained international solidarity and enhanced global assistance to address the funding shortfall and strengthen humanitarian efforts for the displaced population.

Lewis reiterated the UN’s steadfast support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition, reform agenda, and long-term development goals, assuring that the organisation would continue to stand beside the country in its journey toward sustainable growth and prosperity.
