A suspected robber was beaten and hacked to death by villagers in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Sunday morning, after he allegedly attempted to rape a young woman and attacked her with a knife.

The incident happened around 10:30am at Kombonia area under Khuniapalong union of the upazila. 

The deceased was identified as Abdul Mannan, 26, son of Moson Ali of the same area.

Ramu Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mohammad Farid confirmed the matter.

He said Mannan entered a house in the area and tried to rape a young woman. When the attempt failed, he reportedly stabbed her.

Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the scene and caught Mannan as he tried to flee, he said, adding they beat him and hacked him to death on the spot.

According to police, Mannan was accused in multiple cases including murder, robbery, and abduction. His father and three brothers also face similar allegations.
