A district court in Meherpur has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife.

The convicted, Sentu Mia, son of Nurul Islam of Akubpur Bazarpara in Gangni upazila, was also fined Tk 50,000. In default of payment, he will have to serve an additional two years in prison.

Judge Nasim Reza of the Meherpur District and Sessions Judge’s Court delivered the verdict around noon.

According to the case details, on June 5, 2017, Sentu claimed his wife Sagorika had died by suicide. However, her family later filed a case alleging murder.

A post-mortem report confirmed that Sagorika had been killed. After investigation, the case’s investigating officer submitted a charge sheet to the court on January 17, 2018, under sections 302/201 of the Penal Code.

The court found Sentu guilty based on the testimony of 17 witnesses and handed down the sentence accordingly.
