A local journalist came under attack in Kalia upazila of Narail on Tuesday night while returning home from work. 

The victim, Zihadul Islam, is a senior journalist and a member of Kalia Press Club. He serves as the Kalia upazila correspondent for the daily Sokalershomoy newspaper.

The incident happened around 10:30pm near the Trimatha intersection in front of Bardia College. Zihadul was riding his motorcycle back to his home in Chorakhali village under Khashial Union when unidentified miscreants intercepted and assaulted him.

He was later rescued and admitted to the Kalia Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

Journalists of Kalia Press Club on Wednesday morning (July 2) condemned the attack, and expressed deep concern. 

At the same time they demanded immediate arrest and legal action against the perpetrators.

“This is not just an attack on Zihadul Islam, but a direct assault on free journalism and freedom of expression,” said Sheikh Golam Morshed, President of the Kalia Press Club. 

He urged law enforcement to take swift action.

Nargati Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ashiqur Rahman said, “We are aware of the incident but have not received any formal complaint yet. Once we do, we will investigate and take legal steps accordingly.”
