Following the suspension of Chattogram Customs House Commissioner Md. Zakir Hossain, the government has now sent four senior officials of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) into retirement.
The officials retired include Md. Alamgir Hossain, Member of the Tax Policy Department; Dr. Md. Abdur Rouf, Member of the VAT Policy Department; Hossain Ahmad, Member of the Customs Policy Department; and Md. Shabbir Ahmad, Tax Commissioner of Barishal.
The decision was made official on Wednesday (July 2) through a government notification signed by Md. Zakir Hossain, Assistant Secretary of the Internal Resources Division.
The retirement orders cited the completion of 25 years of government service by the officials. It stated that “considering public interest, the government has decided to retire these officials under Section 45 of the Government Servants Act 2018.”
No specific reasons were mentioned in the notification other than the phrase “in the public interest.” However, many speculate that the retirements are linked to these officials’ active participation in recent NBR staff shutdown movements.
Earlier, the government had temporarily suspended Md. Zakir Hossain on Tuesday for closing the Chattogram Customs House during a ‘complete shutdown’ program organized by NBR employees.
