A father and son were killed, and another family member injured, when a speeding truck ran over their auto-rickshaw while they were en route to a hospital in Sirajganj’s Salanga upazila on Tuesday (July 8) morning.
The incident took place in front of the Nur Jahan Hotel in Charia Madhyapara area along the Hatikumrul-Banpara highway, under Salanga police station.
The deceased were identified as Abdul Mannan Khandaker, 70, and his son Jewel Khandaker, 35, of Purna Bera village.
Mannan’s elder son, Russell Khandaker, sustained injuries in the crash.
Hatikumrul Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Rouf confirmed the matter.
He said Abdul Mannan, who had been seriously ill, was being taken to Enayetpur Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College Hospital in a battery-run auto-rickshaw by his two sons.
“A speeding truck struck the vehicle from behind, killing Abdul Mannan and Jewel on the spot,” the OC said. “Russell was injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.”
Police rushed to the scene following the incident and seized the truck. However, the driver and his assistant fled the scene and remain at large.
Family members later took custody of the bodies, police said.
