DHAKA: At least 15 people were injured in a clash between truckers and students of Haradey Glass Factory Polytechnic Institute in Satrasta truck-terminal area of Tejgaon on Friday night.

Four students amongst the injured--Moniruzzaman Tuhin, Razab, Dulal and Sajal Chowdhury--were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The rest received treatment in local clinics, police and witnesses said.

Campus sources said a group of 25/26 students from Kobi Nazrul Hall of the polytechnic went to the neighbouring truck terminal at 9 pm Friday to rescue one of their mates named Shamimul from the custody of lorry labourers.

“But, suddenly, an altercation between the two sides erupted into a fierce clash, as the lobourers attacked them with iron rods and clubs,” says an eyewitnesses account of the rioting.

On the contrary, the labourers claimed that the students attacked them rowdily with hockey sticks and truncheons on a “fictitious allegation” of detaining a student.

Tejgaon industrial area thana Officer-in-Charge Omar Faruk told banglanews24.com.bd, “The clash was triggered by a rumour. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control by 10 pm.”

Police were trying with both the groups to settle the brawl amicably. “For that reason, no case has been filled yet,” said the OC.
