The body of another missing student from Chittagong University (CU) was recovered on Wednesday morning (July 9) from Himchhari beach, a day after three students went missing while bathing in the sea.
The deceased has been identified as Asif Ahmed, a first-year student of the Development Studies Department.
His body was found in the Samitypara area around 24 hours after the tragic incident, confirmed Sayeed Bin Kamal Chowdhury, assistant proctor of CU and a faculty member of the department.
On Tuesday morning, three students—KM Sadman Rahman Sabab, Aritra Hasan, and Asif Ahmed—were swept away by strong waves while bathing near the Himchhari Museum area.
All three belonged to the 2023–24 academic batch. Two of their classmates, Farhan and Riyad, were also present but remained unharmed.
Sabab’s body was recovered on the day of the incident. Asif’s was found the following morning.
However, Aritra Hasan is still missing as of Wednesday afternoon. A team from the Fire Service and Civil Defence is conducting search and rescue operations using divers.
According to classmates, the group had travelled to Himchhari after completing exams and stayed overnight on Monday. Around 5:30 am on Tuesday, the students went down to the beach. Initially, none were willing to swim, but Sabab entered the water first, prompting Asif and Aritra to follow. Moments later, a large wave surged in and dragged the trio into deeper water.
“All five students were residents of Shaheed Md. Farhad Hossain Hall,” said Assistant Proctor Kamal. “Sabab’s body was handed over to his family yesterday. Asif’s body has now been recovered. Efforts are underway to locate Aritra.”
