DHAKA: The High Court scrapped special-court verdicts sentencing former State Minister for labour Amanullah Aman, his wife Sabera Aman and former State Minister for Religious Affairs Sahjahan Omar for amassing wealth by unfair means.

An HC Division Bench comprising Justice Syed Mohammad Dastagir Hossain and Justice AKM Jahirul Haque Monday passed the order exonerating the three following separate writ petitions.

A special court on June 21, 2007 sentenced Amanullah Aman to 13 years and his wife to three years` imprisonment for making wealth “illegally” as the Anti-Corruption Commission filed a case against them with Kafrul thana on March 6, 2007, amid a massive anti-graft drive.

Another special court on May 14, 2008 sentenced Shahjahan Omar to 13 years` imprisonment on the same charge, as a case was filed with Gulshan thana on September 27, 2007.

Barrister Rafiqul Haq stood for the Aman couple and Barrister Ahsanul Karim for Shahjahan Omar while Abdul Aziz Khan for the ACC during the writ hearings.
