IU, KUSHTIA: At least 40 people were injured as Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists clashed with Chhatra League men on the campus on Saturday.

The injured leader and activists were rushed to the University Hospital and later they were admitted to Kushtia Sadar Hospital for better treatment.

Witnesses said a chase and counter-chase began between the activists of Chhatra League and Chhatra Dal when BCL activists beat two JCD men near the tent allocated for JCD.

The brawl triggered sporadic violence between two rivals on the campus and at least 10 cocktails were exploded and several gunshots heard during the clash.

At one stage, some Islami Chhatra Shibir men took the side of Chhatra Dal activists and attacked the BCL men, triggering a clash that left 40 leader-activists injured.

On information, police rushed in and opened several rounds of teargas shells and 46 rounds of bullets to air to disperse the melee.

Kushtia Police Super Mofiz Uddin confirmed the matter to banglanews.

He added: “The condition is under control and additional police was deployed on the campus to avert further untoward situation.”
