NOAKHALI: Two people drowned as a mechanized boat capsized in the Bamni River in Companiganj upazila on Saturday morning.

The deceased are Nur Mawla, 40, and Sekandar Ahmed, 55.

Companiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Amjad Hossain said the trawler with 40-45 passengers aboard overturned at about 10am “due to overload of passengers and strong current in the river”.

The ferry accident took place when the workers of a housing project at Dakshin Char Elahi were going to Char Elahi Union Parishad for collecting relief materials, he said.

All passengers, but two, managed to swim ashore.

Later, fishermen recovered the bodies of two victims.
