Khaleda parleys with lawyers on constitution amendment

DHAKA: Opposition leader and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia held a meeting on Sunday night with senior leaders of her party and lawyers to decide their course of action on the government move to amend the constitution.

Held at her Gulshan office, the meeting decided to oversee the amendments being done, it was learnt, though formally nothing was divulged about what transpired at the parley over the crucial issue.

BNP Standing Committee Member MK Anwar told banglanews24.com.bd that the BNP chairperson held the meeting with party leaders and lawyers but nothing could be said at the moment.

A party source said the issues of people’s democratic rights, alleged government bid to reestablish BAKSAL rule, if democracy will survive came up for discussion.

The meeting also discussed the stand of BNP on such a move of the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.  “The party will oversee the whole thing,” the source also said.

BNP Secretary-General Khondaker Delwar Hossain, Standing Committee members Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, MK Anwar, Supreme Court Bar Association President Advocate Khondaker Mahbub Hossain, BNP chairperson’s adviser Advocate Khondaker Mahbub Uddin Ahmed and Barrister Abdur Razzak were present at the meeting.
