RAB arrests 4 Shibir leaders in Dhaka, Gazipur: Arms, ammo seized

DHAKA: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel in separate drives detained four Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders from the capital and Gazipur district on Tuesday night.

The crime busters said they also seized arms and ammunition and some organizational books during the raids.

The detained are Mohammadpur thana unit president Abdullah Jayed Bin Sabid, Mirpur Bangla College unit president Sultan Mahmud alias Ripon, Motijheel Thana unit former president Alamgir Hossain alias Raju and No 42 ward president Mohammad Imran alias Masud.

At a press conference at the RAB Headquarters Wednesday, officials of the battalion said a joint team of RAB intelligence wing and RAB–2 unit first arrested Abdullah Jayed from Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur district at about 8pm Tuesday.

Acting on his statement, the elite force later arrested Sultan Mahmud from Mirpur –1, Raju from Motijheel and Masud from Mohammadpur areas in the capital.

During the drives, they said, RAB men also seized one shutter gun, five bullets, six bombs, 12 pencil batteries, five packets of explosives, some organizational books, toll-collection receipts, calling cards, three mobile-phone sets and Tk 95,000 in cash.
 
Colonel Sohail, Director of RAB Legal and Media Wing, said, “We have information that Islami Chhatra Shibir and other front organizations of Jamaat-e-Islami might launch terror attacks following the arrest of top-brass Jamaat leaders.”
