DHAKA: At least 149 people, including 27 from the capital, were detained by police from eight districts of the country on charge of planning sabotage during ongoing hartal-blockade called by BNP-led alliance.
In capital, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), in special drives in last 24 hours till Monday morning, detained 27 men of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Hizb ut-Tahrir from different places.
Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of DMP, confirmed the matter to banglanews.
He said that of the detainees, 17 are leaders-activists of BNP, eight are Jamaat-Shibir leaders-activists while two are Hizb ut-Tahrir men.
In Barisal, police detained two people from a possession brought out by member of city unit of BNP and set fire on Badhiar road of the metropolitan around 11:00am.
Confirming the matter, officer-in-charge (OC) Shahiduzzaman of Metropolitan Airport Thana said the processionists also blasted two cocktails there.
In Jessore, 32 people including BNP activists were rounded up by police in overnight drives at eight upazilas of the district, said Aridul Haque, Jessore Additional Superintendent of Police.
In Noakhali, police, in several drives, detained 15 activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami at places of the district till 10:00am.
District SP Elias Sharif confirmed the matter to banglanews.
In Dinajpur, three activists of Jamaat-Shibir, also accused in the Chirirbandar sabotage case, were detained around 11:00pm Sunday.
OC Anisur Rahman of Chirirbandar Thana confirmed the matter to banglanews.
In Chandpur, police detained five activists of BNP-Jamaat on charge of planning sabotage in Sadar and Faridganj upazilas of the district till 8:30am, said Amir Jafar, superintendent of police of Chandpur.
In Khulna, 25 people, including three BNP men, were picked up by police in separate drives at places, said Maniruzzaman Mithu, ADC of KMP Special Branch.
In Chittagong, police detained 14 BNP-Jamaat men from different areas of the district till early Monday.
Muhammad Naimul Hasan, Additional SP (Special Branch) of Chittagong, confirmed the matter to banglanews.
In Satkhira, police rounded up 36 people, including six BNP-Jamaat men, from the district till 11:00am.
