The nation observed the Jail Killing Day on Tuesday with due solemnity.
On November 3, 1975, four national leaders, and heroes of the country’s Liberation War — Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, Captain Mansur Ali, and AHM Quamruzzaman were assassinated inside the Dhaka Central Jail.
The four leaders played a key role in forming the Mujibnagar government in exile, that led the Liberation War in 1971, with Syed Nazrul Islam as the acting president, Tajuddin Ahmad as the prime minister, Mansur Ali as the finance minister, and AHM Qamruzzaman as the home, relief and rehabilitation minister.
Different political parties including the ruling Awami League (AL) marked the day throughout the country following the health guidelines because of corona pandemic.
The AL chalked out elaborate programems includes hoisting of national and party flags at half-mast at the party offices across the country including party’s central office and Bangabandhu Bhaban immediately at dawn on the day. Wearing of black badges and hoisting of black flag were also included under the programme.
Awami League placed a wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi this morning.
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader placed the wreath on Tuesday morning on behalf of the party people.
Later, he told the reporters: "So many mysteries of the jail killing incident are yet to be unveiled. We will have to find out these mysteries for the new generation."
AL presidium member Matia Chowdhury, Dr Abdur Razzak, Abdul Matin Khasru and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Joint-General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, AFM Baha Uddin Nasim, Organizing Secretary Ahmed Hossain, BM Mozammel Haque, Advocate Afzal Hossain and Mirza Azam, Office Secretary Barrister Biplob Barua , Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, among others, also attended the programme.
Placing wreaths, offering Fateha, milad-mahfil and munajat were held at the graves of the four national leaders along with all the martyrs who had been assassinated during the night on August 15 in 1975.
