An activist of ruling Awami League's Bagharpara upazila unit was hacked to death by unidentified miscreants at Betalpara village of the upazila in Jashore.
Khaledur Rahman Tito, 32, son of Muntaj Molla from Betalpara village, died around 9:45 am on Thursday while being taken to Dhaka in a critical condition.
According to Tito's family sources, a group of miscreants attacked Tito around 8:30 pm yesterday while he was going to Hingarpara village to meet someone. Miscreants stabbed him with sharp weapons and left him in critical condition.
Later locals rescued him to Jashore Medical College and Hospital. However, doctors of the hospital advised Tito's family to transfer him to a Dhaka hospital for better treatment. He died in an ambulance while being taken to Dhaka, said family sources.
Tito's uncle and former UP member Intaz Molla alleged that Tito's political rivals carried out the attack led by union Awami League secretary Nur Mohammad Patwary.
Bagharpara police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Syed Al Mamun said Tito was a candidate in the Upazila Parishad by-election. Police is investigating the murder incident.
Voting in by-election to the Bagharpara UP is underway on Thursday.
