A Dhaka court has framed charges against six people, including convicted Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee, in a case filed for embezzling the Zakat fund of Islamic Foundation.
Judge Sayeda Hosneara of Special Judge's Court-1 of Dhaka framed the charges at the makeshift court at Alia Madrasa in Bakshibazar on Monday.
The court fixed February 17 for recording witness testimony in the case.
Sayedee, who is now in jail, was produced before court before the hearing today. After the charge framing, the court sent him to jail again rejecting a petition filed by his lawyer Mujahidul Islam seeking his exemption from the case.
The five other accused are- Mohammad Lutful Haque, former director of Islamic Foundation; Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, former chairman of Mosque Council for Community Advancement; Mia Mohammad Yunus, chief secretary of Bandhujan Parishad; Tofazzal Hossain, former president of Islamic Social Welfare Center; and Md Abdul Haq, assistant director of Islamic Foundation's Mosque Council.
Among the accused, Abul Kalam Azad and Abdul Haq are absconding while three others are currently on bail.
On May 24, 2010, Islamic Foundation's finance and accounting director Aiyub Ali Chowdhury filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station in Dhaka.
On April 30, 2012, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed the charge-sheet in the case.
