Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh on Tuesday said he asked the two plaintiffs to withdraw the defamation cases filed against his predecessor Sayeed Khokon.

He said this at a press conference held at Nagar Bhaban marking the Sakrain festival.

Taposh said: "Countrymen are taking it as a ridiculous matter. Previously, I have said that people will say many things towards those who are assuming responsible posts. But I do not think it is appropriate to response to all their remarks.

"I am not involved with the cases that were lodged yesterday. Some overly enthusiastic people filed those and I will ask them to withdraw the cases quickly," he said.

"I think Khokon defamed me by making derogatory remarks. However, I will file case against him if needed,’ the mayor added.

Earlier at a human chain programme in front of the High Court on Saturday, Khokon said Taposh lost the eligibility to remain in office by transferring hundreds of crores of money from the city corporation to a bank he (Taposh) owns.

On Monday, two defamation cases were filed against Khokon for making defamatory remarks against his successor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.

Kazi Anisur Rahman and Advocate Md Sarwar Alam filed the cases with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury.

In an immediate reaction over the defamation cases, Khokon wanted to know the market value of the reputation of Taposh.

‘Let me know the market value of Taposh’s reputation after getting the details of the case. I will face the case legally and the debt will be calculated on the street,’ Khokon said in a press statement on Monday.
