Ruling Awami League nominated mayoral candidate M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury won the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) elections by a landslide on Wednesday.
According to the unofficial election results received from 733 polling centres, out of total 735, Rezaul got 3,69,284 votes while his opposition BNP mayoral candidate Dr Shahadat Hossain bagged only 52,429 votes.
Returning Officer (RO) Md Hasan-uz-Zaman announced the results on Wednesday night.
After announcing the results, Hasan-uz-Zaman said M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury with 'boat' symbol has been elected, unofficially, as the mayor of CCC for next five years.
Results of 733 polling centers out of 735 have been announced as voting in the remaining two centers was suspended due to violence, he said.
The RO also said a total of 4,35,490 votes were cast in the election. Meanwhile, 1,053 votes were rejected.
Besides, Islami Andolan Bangladesh mayoral candidate Jannatul Islam got 4,980 votes, Bangladesh Islamic Front’s MA Matin bagged 2,126 votes, National People’s Party’s Abul Manzur bagged 4,653 votes, Islamic Front Bangladesh’s Wahed Murad secured 1,109 votes, and independent candidate Khokon Chowdhury got 885 votes.
Electronic voting machines were used in the election held between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm on Wednesday.
